Giuliana Rancic: “Bill and I Put Our Marriage First”

Who doesn’t love Giuliana Rancic?! For me, she is the queen of everything modern. From her style, her chic homes, her amazing career, being a fun romantic wife, and recently adding mamma to her resume, the list of reasons I wanted to interview this modern mom just go on and on.

If you have been missing Giuliana and Bill’s reality show, or haven’t watched in the past, you need to start! Tonight (October 15th) at 10:00 pm Giuliana and Bill premieres on E! G&B have let us into their life like no other reality show. They have showed us the struggles and pain with their fertility issues, Giuliana’s breast cancer diagnose, and letting us follow their journey of using a surrogate to have their first baby together. Giuliana and Bill show us that marriage can be fun! And that family and friends are the most important thing we have. And what ModernMom reader can’t relate to that.

Giuliana on balancing work and kids:

“Without a doubt, leave your work at work.  Put away your phone and computer when you get home from work and savor every minute you have with your family.”

The biggest change since becoming a parent you didn’t think would have happened:

“ My biggest challenge has definitely been balancing motherhood with my career.  There are millions of working moms out there so I know I am not alone in this!”

How do you fit time for yourselves and marriage and still make it fun?

“Bill and I have made it a point to put our marriage first. We are constantly checking in with each other throughout the day and communicating openly and honestly. Our relationship is the first one Duke will see and we are trying to set a positive example for him by showing him, first-hand what a healthy, loving relationship looks like.”

Giuliana on reality TV – Why did you decide to put your marriage on TV?

“When the Style Network approached us about filming our wedding for a television special, we initially wanted to say no, absolutely not. But after a few days thinking about it, we decided it would be fun and a great way to document our special day. Then when we approached about doing a regular series, we were very reluctant.  We had some reservations because there are so many awful, negative reality shows out there, but Bill and I decided that we were going to keep our show positive, real and most importantly, make marriage look cool again and I think we definitely accomplished that!”- ME TOO!

Tell us about your choice to put baby Duke on TV:

“Bill and I decided from day one of filming our show that we were going to be real and honest with our viewers.  Our audience had been through infertility and breast cancer with us, we felt like we wanted our story to come full circle and it did with Duke. He loves the camera! He is a total pro! He is always smiling into the camera and is fascinated by the boom microphones. He steals the show for sure!”

You didn’t hold anything back with your struggles with fertility and breast cancer. You being so open has helped millions of women. As someone who has had close family and friends  that have struggled with fertility you have helped so much in those who have to go through it, and  even those that don’t how to support those that are going through it. What has been the hardest and most rewarding thing with sharing your story?

“Without a doubt, the most rewarding part for me is when women come up to me and say, “Because of you, I got my first mammogram” or “When I heard your story, I went and got checked by my doctor and found out I had breast cancer.” ?The decision to go public with my breast cancer diagnosis was a difficult one, but I knew that I had an incredible platform to spread awareness and do some good.”

With October and breast cancer awareness month coming up do you have plans/organizations you work with during this time of year?

“When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer and deciding on surgery and treatment, I relied on the support of one of my close friends, Bright Pink’s Founder, Lindsay Avner. Lindsay had undergone a double mastectomy and reconstruction years earlier so her advice was invaluable as I prepared and recovered from surgery. Bright Pink is a Chicago-based national non-profit who had the infrastructure to support bringing Fab-U-Wish™ to life. I love that they focus on education and inspiring young women to be proactive with their breast and ovarian health. They are also very focused on bringing brightness into the lives of women so I am proud to have Fab-U-Wish™ live under the Bright Pink umbrella.”

What can moms do the month of October to protect themselves and bring awareness?

“Women need to know the importance of self exams. It’s so easy to put off going to the doctor, but women have no excuse when it comes to self exams. It’s so easy to do in the shower or before bed. If women are familiar with their bodies, they will know immediately when something changes or is wrong.”

Some fun questions I asked G and B:

Kids in sports some parents are concered on their kids playing football can Duke play football?

“ Bill has always said he wants his son to be a quarterback!

I talk a lot in my blogs about the benefits of children playing sports. Your feelings on kids in sports and contact sports? Football/Lacrosse?

“Bill and I definitely want Duke to play sports. We want him to be strong and learn the value of teamwork and leadership.

Your feelings on letting your kids quit a sport?

“ I suppose we will have to cross that bridge when we come to it, but I think the ultimate goal for every parent is to have a happy, healthy child.”

Do you play fantasy football Bill?  GirlsGoneFootball is a website I have for women to learn about football and play fantasy Giuliana would you play?

“ I am not really very familiar with football and all of the rules, so I don’t think I would want to play. I like to win and I am not so sure I would have a chance at winning in Fantasy Football!”

How important is it stay active and healthy with and for your son? Advice for parents?

“Extremely important!! In fact, that is one of the reasons I decided to have my double mastectomy. I didn’t want to keep looking over my shoulder, waiting for my cancer to come back. I want to be healthy and around for a long time, not only for myself, but for my family.”

Love fashion police…tell us what it is like working on the show with Joan Rivers?

“Joan Rivers is a legend. She is so hilarious and is the ultimate professional, but what many people don’t know about her is that she is one of the warmest, most compassionate women I have ever met. She has always been there for me throughout my fertility struggles, breast cancer and of course, the birth of Duke and I truly feel like she is my family. I love Joan.”

Have you ever run into a celebrity you have not said nice fashion things about on the red carpet?

“There was one time when I criticized one of Tina Fey’s look on a red carpet and she actually came up to me a few weeks later on a different red carpet and said “Oh you’re the one who took a huge dump on my last outfit on Fashion Police!” She totally called me out! But she was a good sport about it! And it’s important to mention that she has looked better and better on every red carpet since my constructive criticism!”

What inspired you to start your own clothing collection? Where can we buy it?

“I wanted to start my own clothing line because I wanted to create stylish, yet practical clothes that are accessible to all women. The sizing ranges from XXS to XXXL and truthfully, the pieces look great on women of all shapes and sizes.  I also wanted to create pieces that were affordable without skimping on quality and I am very proud of the line so far!  Items from my clothing line, G by Giuliana Rancic, can be purchased on HSN and I have to say, everything in my new Fall collection has a place in every woman’s closet.”

What is the one must have fall fashion trend of the season for moms?

“This season is all about layering and I have some great pieces that are perfect for layering!”

Quick hair tricks you have learned to share with moms on the go?

One hair trick that I am a huge fan of is hats!! Well, that’s not technically a “hair trick,” but if I don’t feel like doing my hair or if I don’t have time in the mornings because I am with the baby, I simply throw on a cute hate! I actually found a great fedora in the men’s department at Target! Such a great find!

Is your Chicago “dream home” finished? Will we see it on G &B?

“Almost! We hope to have it done in a few short months. You will be seeing it all on next season of Giuliana & Bill.

More restaurants?

“Yes! We are in the process of opening another RPM in Washington, DC and also an RPM Steak in Chicago. RPM has done so incredible well and we are so excited to expand!

Would either of you do DWTS?

I don’t think so! We are both a little terrified of dancing!

Favorite vacation spot?

We love going to Cabo San Lucas and of course, Tuscany. It’s our dream to one day own a Villa there so we can go and live there for months at a time.

Where do you both see your family in 5 years?

Happy, healthy and enjoying our dream home in Chicago!
