One couple in Manchester had a very exciting surprise guest at their wedding on Friday – Queen Elizabeth herself!
The 85-year-old monarch dropped in on John and Frances Canning’s nuptials, taking them up on an invitation they sent on a lark after finding out that their reception was being held at the same venue where she was attending a luncheon that day.
“I’m a big fan of the royal family. When we found out who the VIP was we wrote to her, a bit light-heartedly, and got a nice letter back from a lady in waiting. We didn’t expect anything further to come from it” the groom told the Manchester Evening News.
Accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, the Queen chatted and posed for photographs with the happy couple.
“It was very special – it was so lovely that she took the trouble to speak to us,” the new Mrs. Canning told The Sun. Even more lucky, an amateur videographer captured the exchange, which made a great wedding gift for the couple.
The Queen was visiting Manchester as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour, celebrating the six decades that she has held the throne.
