“You’re going on a trip? Bring me with you! I can fit in your suitcase!”
While we've all said that once or twice in jest, no one’s ever actually tried to stow a person in their carry-on luggage. Until now.
An Egyptian family was detained by airport security staff at the United Arab Emirates’ Sharjah International Airport when official was shocked to discover the outline of a baby in an X-ray of the couple’s carry-on bag. The couple lacked a passport or visa for the 5-month-old infant and as a result, have been denied access to the UAE.
Both parents have valid visas to visit the UAE, but had returned to Egypt while the woman was pregnant so that she could have the baby at home. After they were stopped by officials at the airport for lack of proper documentation for their newborn, they waited for a shift change and then decided to take their chances and attempt to smuggle the child through UAE customs.
It is unclear how the baby made it onto the plane in Egypt without a passport.
The couple has been charged with endangering the life of the five month old baby by exposing it to radiation in the X-ray scanner. As a police official told The Sun, "This machine is very dangerous for anyone, let alone a baby in a bag to pass through."
Luckily, there have not been any reports so far that the child was harmed by the machine.
