Bar Installs Pregnancy Test Vending Machine
Would you like a pregnancy test with that beer?
If you hit up Pub 500 in Mankato, Minnesota for your brewski, that's a real option.
The bar has a vending machine near the women's restroom that allows patrons swipe their credit or debit card and purchase a pregnancy tests for a mere $3.
It was installed by Healthy Brains for Children, a non-profit organization aimed at preventing brain damage from prenatal exposure to alcohol.
According to a new survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 13 pregnant women reported consuming alcohol.
“It’s an epidemic," the organization's founder Jody Allen Crowe told the NY Times. “The amount of prenatal exposure to alcohol is really not something people talk about because it’s such a guilt-ridden type of discussion.”
In the month since the machine's installation, a few dozen tests have been sold.
(Awkward or awesome?)
“We thought it was a strange idea at first but very quickly came to the realization that this could be beneficial,” one patron told the Times. “It’s all about protecting a child.”
"It’s putting awareness at the point of consumption," said another. "I’m surprised it hasn’t been done before."
Crowe hopes to eventually put dispensers in other public places like gas stations, fitness centers, shopping malls.
What do you think? Would you ever consider doing a quick pee test before you have a drink?
