Authorities took a two-year-old into protective custody Wednesday after they discovered his mother dead inside the house.
Micaela Quinn, who lived in Portland Oregon, was reported missing by a friend who had not seen the 40-year-old in a few days.
When police entered the home, they found that she had died, apparently two days before, of natural causes.
The little boy was hungry and thirsty, but otherwise seemed in good health.
“It’s truly heartbreaking,” Sgt. Pete Simpson, bureau public information officer, told The Oregonian. “We can only assume what this poor kid was thinking about the past couple of days. Fortunately, the little guy is OK.”

Quinn was believed to suffer from ongoing medical issues. Her son remains in protective custody while authorities search for relatives.
Simpson added that it was “fortunate” her friend called police.
“It’s a good reminder that people need to look out for each other,” he said.
