With his voice breaking and tears in his eyes, President Barack Obama addressed the horrific shooting that took place at a Connecticut elementary school this morning - saying "our hearts are broken" for the families of the victims.

Speaking from the White House Friday afternoon, Obama vowed “meaningful action” to prevent future tragedies.

“We’ve endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years, and each time I hear the news, I react not as a president but as everybody else would, as a parent,” Obama said. “And that is especially true today. I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do.”

"The majority of those who died today were children -- beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old."

After pausing to compose himself for perhaps five long seconds, he continued, “They had their entire lives ahead of them: birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.'’

Authorities say at least 26 people, most of them children, were killed when a gunman clad in black military gear opened fire inside Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning.  The shooting is one of the deadliest in US history.
