How to Make Baby Shower Centerpieces

The baby shower centerpiece can serve a dual purpose at the party. The centerpiece will add color and life to the table setting, and it can also be used to feed guests, as a place to put small gifts for the expecting mom, or as a place to store party favors for the guests. Centerpieces that can be shared by the guests, rather than taken home by one guest at the end of the party (unless it's the guest of honor) are best. The centerpieces can match any theme or color scheme.

Food Pyramid Centerpiece

Step 1

Save money by making centerpieces that are decorative but also edible. Baby shower guests will appreciate having something to nibble on while seated at their tables.

Step 2

Place a large tray or piece of cardboard covered with aluminum foil in the center of the table. Add white paper doilies to make it fancy.

Step 3

Add the first layer of food to the centerpiece. The food could be powdered or glazed doughnuts, store-bought cookies, or a variety of tiny muffins. Make or buy sugar cookies cut into baby carriage, rattle or stork shapes.

Step 4

Flatten out pastel colored muffin papers. Place the muffin papers on top of the first layer to keep the first layer protected. Place the next layer of the food on top of the papers. Start in the middle and work your way out, leaving the outermost layer of food on the first layer as is, without adding a second layer. This will help create a pyramid shape.

Step 5

Continue adding the muffin papers and layers of food, decreasing the size of the layers as you work your way up. Cardboard cake tiers may be used between layers.

Centerpiece Favors

Step 1

Create centerpieces that can be taken home by the baby shower guests. Place a straw table runner or a couple of bamboo place mats in the center of the table.

Step 2

Purchase a collection of eclectic tea cups and small planting pots from the local discount store or a consignment shop. Or add some glue to the outside of a yogurt container or plastic planting plot and add a square of tissue paper. Add more glue and another piece of tissue paper. Use a couple of layers of tissue paper in different colors for a rainbow effect.

Step 3

Add soil and an herb plant to each cup or pot. Tie a ribbon around each plant and attach growing, feeding and planting instructions.

Step 4

Arrange the potted herbs in the center of the table on top of straw place mats. Place the tallest herbs in the center, with the shorter herbs around the perimeter.

Step 5

Leave a note on the place setting of each guest asking her to take home her own baby herb plant. A packet of seeds may be used as the place-card holder for each guest, to make the centerpiece tie in with the table decor.

Fruit Bouquets

Step 1

Make your own fruit centerpiece by slicing up fresh fruit and arranging it in one large vase or by using individual vases for each guest.

Step 2

Cut the top off a pineapple. Use a knife to slice off the thick, prickly peel. Cut the pineapple into circles. Use a sharp flower-shaped cookie cutter to make flower shapes. Use a knife or small circle cutter to remove the core. Pierce the pineapple slice from the bottom and press it through. When you get to the hole in the center, hold a grape in place, and stick the skewer through the grape and into the top portion of the pineapple.

Step 3

Stick whole strawberries, blueberries, cut-up melon onto wooden skewers. Insert the skewers into a piece of wax-covered floral craft foam inside a short vase.

Step 4

Wash, rinse and dry grapes and leave them on the vine stems. Use a variety of red grapes and green grapes. Drape the grapes over wine or drinking glasses.

Step 5

Add fresh mint leaves to the bouquet. Pierce the stem of the mint leaves with a toothpick to hold the mint leaves in place. Fresh parsley may be used to fill in any gaps in the fresh fruit bouquet centerpiece.

Warnings

  • Do not use overly-fragrant fresh flowers on the table if you are serving food.
