Talk about a costly mistake!
A man in California accidentally sold his wife’s $23,000 engagement ring for $5 at a garage sale earlier this month.
Before heading to the hospital to give birth to her fourth child, Racquel Cloutier, 31, hid her 3-carat diamond ring in an old watch box to keep it out of reach of her little ones.
“Whenever you’re pregnant, your fingers start to swell so I thought it’d be a good idea to take it off,” she told GMA.
But little did she know that her husband Eric was planning a little spring cleaning!
“Every year our community holds a garage sale. I was in the hospital, I just had a baby, so my husband thought it would be fun for my other kids if they could sell some things at the garage sale,” the Laguna Niguel mom said.
He scooped up the box, not realizing what a valuable treasure it contained, and ultimately sold it for $5. When she got home from the hospital, Racquel realized the mistake.
“It wasn’t until that Tuesday that I thought to put my ring back on. I didn’t see the box.” She found her husband crying, “You just sold my wedding ring!”
Luckily, this story has a happy ending. Alyssa Lossau, whose mother bought the box, happened to see a news story about the lost ring, and promptly emailed the couple to let them know it had been found.
The Cloutiers were overjoyed by the news and offered to make a donation to the charity of Lossau’s choice as a mark or their gratitude.
“I don’t think I’ll be taking it off anytime soon,” said Racquel.
