Pills to Help You Get Pregnant

Some people are lucky enough to get pregnant the first time they try, but others have a hard time getting pregnant. Despite efforts at tracking ovulation and trying to time sex, you may find that you fall into the second category. Fortunately, there are pills you can take that can help you get pregnant, but you should use them only under the care of your doctor.

Clomiphene

Clomiphene–marketed under the brand names Clomid and Serophene–is probably going to be the first pill that your doctor prescribes. It forces your body to ovulate, which makes it particularly useful for women who have menstrual problems, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome. You take the pill for five days; then you can expect to ovulate around seven days later. In most cases, you should be able to get pregnant within three cycles.

Bromocriptine

Some women may have a small tumor in the pituitary gland of the brain that makes ovulation difficult. If this is the case for you, your doctor may prescribe Bromocriptine–or Parlodel–which will reduce the size of the tumor, making it more likely that you will ovulate.

Herbs for Women

If you’d rather go an all-natural route instead of prescribed medications, you can try taking herbs in pill form. Black cohosh and Siberian ginseng can help regulate your cycle and cause you to ovulate, while chasteberry works to improve the pituitary gland. Although herbs have been used in native populations, you should note that the Federal Drug Administration does not regulate them the same way that it does pharmaceuticals.

Herbs for Men

If there doesn’t seem to be a problem with your ovulation, perhaps your partner has a low sperm count or inactive sperm. To help with this, he could take some herbs that can improve sperm count and performance. L-carnitine, vitamins E and C, Coenzyme Q10 and folic acid have been shown to help male fertility problems.
