How to Induce Labor While Having Sex

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that more than 1 in 5 births are medically induced in the hospital, a process that could cause problems in delivery. If you’re ready to bring your baby into the world, you could try to induce labor naturally while having sex. Though some doctors disagree about whether sex can induce labor, other doctors–and years of folk wisdom–believe that it works. Go into labor using the same methods that you used to get pregnant.

Step 1

Wait until your baby is due. A premature birth could mean that your baby will have medical problems as she’s born. It’s best to wait until you are at or past your due date to try actively to induce labor.

Step 2

Stimulate your nipples while having sex. Nipple stimulation releases oxytocin, a natural hormone that can start to cause contractions. During foreplay and the main event, your partner should focus much of his attention on your nipples.

Step 3

Ask your man to ejaculate inside the vagina. If your doctor is going to induce labor, she’s going to start with a prostaglandin gel applied to the cervix, which starts to prepare the cervix to “loosen up” to prepare for the birth of your child. Sperm contains prostaglandin, so by ejaculating inside the vagina, you are exposing the cervix to this all-important hormone.

Step 4

Have an orgasm or two. The female orgasm causes the uterus to contract–the same contractions that you need for labor. If your baby is ready to come out, these contractions could be the start of real labor.
