How to Make Boutique Koozies
A koozie keeps your canned drink cold. You’ve probably seen or have received a foam koozie emblazoned with a company logo, given away as a free gift. While those koozies are practical, they are not stylish. Keep your drink cool in style by making your own boutique, customized koozie. Use insulated quilt batting to keep the drink cool and fabric in your choice of pattern to spice things up. If you can embroider, you can go one step further and produce a koozie that is truly special.
Step 1
Measure the circumference and height of a soda or beer can. Cut two rectangles of cotton fabric so that each piece measures the height of the can by the circumference of the can, plus 1 inch. If the can is 6 inches high and 7 inches around, cut the rectangles so that they measure 6-by-8 inches. The finished koozie will be a little bit shorter than the height of the can.
Step 2
Embroider a design or your initials onto one or both pieces of cotton, if you like.
Step 3
Place the two cotton pieces on top of each other, with right sides together. Pin the edges together and then stitch along three sides, 1/4-inch away from the edge. Leave one short side open.
Step 4
Clip the corners of the cotton pieces, being careful not to cut through the seams. Turn the cotton right side out.
Step 5
Cut a piece of batting so that it measures the height of the can minus 1 inch by the circumference of the can. For a 6-by-7 inch can, cut batting that is 5-by-7 inches.
Step 6
Place the batting between the two cotton pieces. Push it up into the cotton so that the corners match. You should not be able to see the batting.
Step 7
Fold the open, raw edges of the cotton into the batting to conceal them. Top-stitch along the four sides, about a 1/4-inch away from the edge, sewing the open portion closed.
Step 8
Wrap the fabric snugly around the can. If you embroidered one piece of fabric, make sure that piece is on the inside, against the can at this point. Pin the two ends of the fabric together, and slide the koozie off the can. Trim off any excess fabric. Stitch the open end of the koozie closed.
Step 9
Turn the koozie right side out so that the embroidered portion shows. Slide it onto the can.
