Easy Love Potions for Beginners

No matter what you may have heard, a love potion won’t make the man of your dreams fall madly in love with you against his will. The true purpose of love spells, say authors Marian Singer and Trish MacGregor in “The Only Wiccan Spell Book You’ll Ever Need,” is to enhance your own energy and personal power to attract the person who is right for you. The ritual and ceremony of creating love potions help you concentrate your will and focus it on attaining your goals.

Goals and Intentions

Making a love potion is a type of spell work, and like any type of spell, the work benefits if you have clearly focused your intentions and visualized your goal. The components you choose, the herbs you use, the incantations you speak and the way that you use the potion all depend upon your intent. More importantly, you infuse your intent into the potion as you make it, so it’s important to understand exactly what you want to accomplish. Common intentions and goals for love potions include attracting love in general, attracting the love of a specific person and strengthening the love of a specific person.

Time Frame

Start potions to attract or increase love at the new moon or during the moon’s waxing period. Depending on the complexity of the potion and the ingredients, it may take several days or weeks to complete it. Some potions may call for herbal infusions made with herbs gathered at the new moon and steeped in water or wine until the next new moon. Other potions require herbs or other ingredients collected or combined during specific seasons of the year. In “Wiccan Love Spells,” Gerina Dunwich makes the instructions simple for beginners. She gives a recipe for a love potion which you must prepare on a Friday — the day dedicated to Venus — when there is a waxing moon, preferably in the sign of Libra or Taurus, both signs ruled by Venus.

Preparation

Prepare yourself and your environment before you begin making your love potion. The fewer distractions around you, the easier it will be for you to concentrate your energies on the potion you are infusing with your will. Some practitioners bathe and put on a scent that makes them feel powerful and attractive. Others dress in a ritual robe to help get them into the right frame of mind. While you are gathering your ingredients and equipment, concentrate on your goal. Imagine yourself in the relationship you are trying to attract, or speak an incantation while you work.

Ingredients and Equipment

As much as possible, work with equipment made of natural materials and use herbs and flowers grown organically. To attract love, work by the light of pink candles, preferably made of soy or beeswax. Mix your potions with pure, fresh water or red wine. Spices that attract or inspire love include cinnamon, anise, cloves and fennel. Flowers and herbs you may use in love potions include rose petals, rosemary, primrose, lilac, lavender, lily and mullein.

Incantations and Affirmations

Incantations force you to focus your intentions while you mix your potion. You can chant a poem or incantation you find in a book on love spells, but creating your own incantation carries more power. It can be as simple as repeating the name of your intended seven times while you stir the potion in a pot, or a statement of intention, such as “Water, take love from the heart of the rose. Bring my true love to me as the full moon grows.”

Uses

Store your potion in a covered bottle away from the light until you are ready to use it. Add a few drops of scented love potion to your bath or to your laundry, or dab it on as you would perfume. Serve a potion made with wine to the object of your affection, or add a few drops to his drink — but be sure that any potion you use this way is completely non-toxic.
