Organic Products for Hair Growth

Although a number of products claim to help hair grow, most of them contain ingredients that you may not want to put on your head or have run down the drain. Several organic products are available that may help you regain lost hair or grow more hair. You can also try to make your own organic hair growth products.

Hair Loss

You may experience hair loss for several reasons. High levels of stress or changes to your body, such as menopause or pregnancy, may make you shed more hair than you wish. Overtreating your hair may cause it to fall out. In some cases, the hair will regrow on its own after the stress passes or you stop using too much styling product. In others, you may need to give your hair a bit of a boost.

Types

Just as there are several types of conventional hair growth products, there are several organic options. Manufacturers of some conditioners and shampoos claim the products help your hair grow and contain organic ingredients, such as spirulina, a type of algae that is believed to help grow hair. Certain supplements that contain minerals, such as zinc, or vitamins, such as B12, and biotin may also help hair growth. Homemade products, such as a conditioner made from vinegar and rosemary, may also help your hair grow. Rosemary has been used throughout the years to help hair grow.

Side Effects and Risks

While you may prefer using an herbal supplement or organic shampoo to help your hair grow, doing so is not without risks. Some herbs may interact with other medication you may be on, such as birth control, so you should check with your doctor before using them. You may also find that you are allergic to certain ingredients, such as rosemary.

Other Options

In addition to using organic products to restore hair, you may want to make other changes to your lifestyle. Try eating a more balanced diet that contains plenty of vitamins, minerals and protein. The MayoClinic.com recommends handling your hair gently to prevent additional loss. Brush it gently. Don’t wear it in tight ponytails, and avoid using heat to dry it as much as possible.

Results

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, people with alopecia areata, a condition that causes hair to fall out in patches, who rubbed rosemary oil and other herbs, such as lavender and thyme, on their scalps experienced more hair regrowth than those who did not. The study was small, though, so it is difficult to know if it was the herbs that were effective. Producers of Samson’s Secret, a line of organic hair supplements, claim that users will see results within three months, while producers of Kerastase Densitive, another supplement, claim that users will see hair mass nearly double after six months.
