Cheap & Inexpensive Home Decorating

You can make your house look like a million dollars without actually spending a million dollars. You don’t need to hire a designer to make your home look like it belongs in a magazine. You may actually be better off not hiring someone, since you’ll save money and have a complete say in all decorating decisions.

Types

Several objects help you decorate your home without spending a lot. Textiles, such as curtains, pillows and tablecloths, will spruce up the dreariest of spaces by adding a splash of color and texture. Branches in a large vase add a touch of nature while a vase of flowers or a potted houseplant give the room a touch of life. You can also decorate with inexpensive picture frames filled with photographs of friends and family or your favorite images from magazines.

Where to Find Cheap Decorating Items

If you like the look of vintage or antique items, you may have a lot of success looking for home decorating items at flea markets or vintage stores. Keep in mind that vintage stores often mark up their items, so you may have more luck finding inexpensive items at thrift stores or yard sales. If you want new, contemporary decorating items, try a discount retailer or discount home design store.

Do It Yourself

Many home decorating items, such as pillows, picture frames and curtains, can be quickly and easily made by you if you have the time, ability and inclination. Cheap, plain picture frames can be embellished with paint or covered in a collage. You can also make your own wall art by painting pieces of foam and attaching to the wall in an interesting pattern. Create pillows by cutting fabric into squares or circles, sewing together, and stuffing them with polyester fiber.

Get the Most Bang for Your Buck

Just because an item is inexpensive, doesn’t mean it has to be cheap. You can find inexpensive items that have stood the test of time of flea markets or thrift stores, and you can find inexpensive items that will fall apart within a month at any store. Make sure you get inexpensive home decorating items that will last by inspecting everything before you buy it. If a pillow has loose threads or worn edges, put it back and look for another inexpensive, but not as cheaply made, one.

Furniture, Walls and Floors

You don’t need to replace old and worn furniture to improve the look of your home. If a table is scratched, try giving it a new coat of stain, paint or varnish. Cover or replace the cushions on chairs and sofas. A quick coat of paint or a strategically placed poster or canvas can cover a wall, while a throw rug can hide a scratched hardwood floor or stained carpet.
