Rebel Black Bear is New Ole Miss Mascot

Students, faculty members, season ticket holders alumni and staff at the University of Mississippi have picked the Rebel Black Bear as their new on-field mascot. The bear has replaced Colonel Reb, a classic Southern gentleman, who was voted out because the school is trying to distance itself from symbols of the old South.

Other symbols and practices of the old South that have been banished at Ole Miss sporting events in the past few years include the waving of the confederate flag at games and the fight chant, "The South will rise again."

The new mascot was anounced Thursday, after months of polling and campus-wide voting.
