Michelle Duggar, who was pregnant with her 20th child with husband Jim Bob, learned the heartbreaking news that she suffered a miscarriage during a check up on Thursday.
During an appointment to find out the sex of the baby, the doctor was unable to find a heartbeat and informed the couple that they had miscarried in the second trimester.
“After the appointment, we came back home and told the children… We had just been talking about baby names last night and they were getting excited about naming a boy or a girl. It has been a real sad disappointment,” Michelle told PEOPLE.
“I feel like my heart broke telling my children,” she continued. “That was the most difficult. The Lord is the giver of life and he can choose when that life is ready to go on and be with Him.”
The 45-year-old mom said the family plans to hold a funeral service and will chose a name when they find out whether the baby was a boy or a girl.
The Duggars star in a TLC reality show called 19 Kids & Counting, which follows the daily life of their large family.
Jim Bob Duggar posted the following statement on the show’s website:
“Earlier today at a routine doctor’s appointment, Michelle and I received the sad news that we lost the baby. Michelle is resting comfortably at home with the support of the entire family. We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, but ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
