Mass Graves Discovered in Iwo Jima

Two mass graves have been discovered on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, site of one of the bloodiest battles of WWII. The graves may hold the remains of thousands of Japanese soldiers. A team of searchers have discovered 51 remains in the area.

In August, Japanese researchers said they would be in Iwo Jima searching mass graves of Japanese soldiers killed in World War II. Since1968, annual search parties have led to the recovery of remains of around 8,700 people.

The 1945 battle of Iwo Jima lasted one month, with American soldiers fighting 22,000 Japanese soldiers. Most of the Japanese were killed.
