France is standing by its burqa ban, despite threats from bin Laden. The burqa is a garment worn by women in some Islamic traditions to cover their bodies. The French law is very controversial; it has been argued as an attack against discrimination and an attack against diversity. Some say it is a step in the right direction for women, some say the opposite.
Regardless of public opinion, France is firm on their law banning the garments. This is true even despite recent threats from al-Queda leader bin Laden. In a videotape, bin Laden threatens to kill French citizens in revenge for France's law.
At a European Union summit, French President Nicolas Sarkozy states, "Obviously, France doesn't let anyone dictate its policies, and certainly not terrorists." He is not dismissing the threat from bin Laden. "I didn't need a message from Mr. bin Laden to know to be worried about them." he said.
