Happy Meal toys might soon be banned in parts of California. Santa Clara county officials voted to ban toys and other promotion items that accompany high-calorie meals.
Supervisor Ken Yeager, who sponsored the ban, said, "This ordinance prevents restaurants from preying on children's' love of toys. This ordinance breaks the link between unhealthy food and prizes."
Supervisor Donald Gage, who voted against the ban, made this point: "If you can't control a 3-year-old child for a toy, God save you when they get to be teenagers."
As a compromise to win majority support, the board agreed to wait to implement the measure for 90 days to give the fast-food industry time to improve nutritional value of the meals.
