Your feet feel as though they are on fire, and you can’t seem to get relief. Burning feet, a feeling brought on by a number of conditions from athlete’s foot to diabetes, can interfere with your sleep and make walking a challenge. Depending on the cause of burning feet, you may be able to stop it with a few simple changes to your lifestyle. If the pain and burning don’t go away after a week or so, see your doctor.
Fill a basin with cool water and rest your feet in it to soothe the burning feeling.
Elevate your feet while relaxing. You can try sitting on your couch with your legs extended and your feet propped up with a pillow.
Take an over-the-counter pain medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Check with your doctor before taking a pain reliever if you are on any other medication.
Use an over-the-counter antifungal cream if the burning is caused by athlete’s foot. Ask your doctor for a prescription antifungal cream if the over-the-counter options are ineffective.
Stop any unhealthy habits that cause nerve damage and burning foot syndrome. Drinking too much alcohol can lead to burning feet, as can letting diabetes get out of control. Monitor your blood sugar closely and make needed changes to your diet and medication to keep it under control.
Take a vitamin B12 supplement if your burning feet are due to a deficiency. Not getting enough B12 can cause nerve damage.
