Fashion Friday: Black Swan Song

I love it when a great film comes out that also inspires a fashion trend, as is the case with Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller Black Swan. Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy, along with costumer Amy Westcott, dreamed up the frothy feather, tulle and Swarovski crystal-bedecked wardrobe for the film, which stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. Suddenly, we’re seeing airy pieces that pay homage to the art of dance all over the place–from the runways of Lanvin to the floor of Forever 21. To help you rock this trend, I’ve rounded up some of the best ballet-inspired items on the market now.

For an inexpensive nod to Black Swan, try this 20s-style headband.

Michael Kors’ whimsical feather skirt gives a nod to the Black Swan milieu.

Having a bad hair day? Slick it back into a chic chignon and add this bejeweled, ballerina-esque headpiece.

Tulle seems to be the ladylike material of the moment.

There’s no gel in the toes, but these Lanvin ballet flats are equally as elegant as a dancer’s pointe shoes.

Try this beaded bracelet for an understated tip of the hat to Aronofsky’s film.

Alber Elbaz must have had ballet on his mind when designing this tiered tulle dress

The ruched top of this Giambattista Valli frock is reminiscent of a pretty pink leotard.

Black Swan isn’t short on darkness. Neither is this McQueen clutch.

If Black Swan gives you nightmares, this blanket won’t help with the bad dreams. But it’ll keep you warm while you’re having them–it’s double-ply cashmere.
