Danish Zoo Kills Young Giraffe To Prevent Inbreeding

The Copenhagen Zoo killed a 2-year-old male giraffe and fed his remains to lions on Sunday, because of what zoo officials called “a duty to avoid inbreeding.”
The Washington Post reports:

Marius, a healthy male, was put down Sunday using a bolt pistol, said
zoo spokesman Tobias Stenbaek Bro. Visitors, including children, were
invited to watch while the giraffe was then skinned and fed to the
lions… [
the zoo] allowed parents to decide whether their children should watch what the zoo regarded as an important display of scientific knowledge about animals.
The euthanization took place in spite of an online petition to save the giraffe with more than 20,000 signatures and an offer from a private individual who wanted to buy the giraffe for 500,000 euros ($680,000).
“I know the giraffe is a nice looking animal, but I don’t think there
would have been such an outrage if it had been an antelope, and I don’t
think anyone would have lifted an eyebrow if it was a pig,” Bengt Holst, Copenhagen Zoo’s scientific director told the AP.
What do you think? And animal rights issues aside, we want to hear your thoughts about letting children watch the giraffe’s death and dissection.
Would you ever let your little one watch something like that, even in the name of science?
