Suburban Family’s Chinese Vase Sells for $83M

An 18th century Chinese vase owned by a suburban London family has sold for $83 million, making it one of the most expensive artworks ever sold.

The porcelain vase was sold by a family clearing out a deceased relative's house for 51.6 million pounds (equivalent to $83M) to a Chinese bidder, on behalf of an undisclosed buyer — a record for a Chinese work of art.

The vase had been in the family at least since the 1930s, but they don't know how it was acquired.

Got any old works of art laying around your house?
