Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of political figure John Edwards, has died Tuesday after a six year battle with breast cancer. She was 61. Elizabeth's cancer recently spread to her liver. Doctors advised against further treatment.
She spent her final days at her Chapel Hill home amongst family and friends.
Elizabeth was first diagnosed with cancer in 2004, when her then-husband was the democratic nominee for President. She did not publicly announce her illness until after the race. After months of treatment, her cancer went into remission. Sadly, it returned in 2007.
Three months into the 2008 presidential race, Elizabeth learned the cancer had entered her bones. In August 2008, John Edwards acknowledged his affair with Rielle Hunter, a member of his campaign team. In the beginning of 2010, he admitted to being the father of Rielle's daughter who was born in February, 2008.
Elizabeth was a brilliant lawyer, advocate and woman. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends. She will be missed.
