Tennis great Martina Navratilova was forced to tunr back while climbing Africa’s highest peak after feeling ill.
The 54-year-old was assisted down the mountain by porters and hospitalized because of fluid accumulation in her lungs.
She was diagnosed with high-altitude pulmonary edema. Fortunately, she is expected to recover quickly.
Martina was trying to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise money and awareness for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation as part of a 27-person team.
Martina, who won 18 singles Grand Slams, never climbed higher than 12,000 feet before this climb. She started feeling ill at 14, 765 feet up the mountain.
"I’m disappointed not to be able to complete this amazing journey," Martina said in a statement. "It was something that I have wanted to do for so long but it was not to be."
