7.4 Quake Hits Coast of Japan; Sparks Tsunami Alert


A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan near the Bonin Islands early Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 155 km (95 miles) off the Bonin Islands, some 1,000 km south-east of Tokyo.

Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued tsunami warnings for the Ogasawara Islands and a tsunami advisory for southern Japan.

In 1995, a magnitude-7.2 quake in the port city of Kobe killed 6,400 people.
