10 Things to Pack for Summer Camp

Summer camp is a wonderful opportunity for kids to learn new skills, build new relationships and have lots of fun--but if your child isn't prepared, the fun could quickly come to a screeching halt. Being prepared should be the mantra of every kid going off to summer camp, and packing these 10 things will assure that your camper will always be ready for fun...continues below

Personal Care

A small bag full of toiletries is essential for your summer camper. This bag should include soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush and a comb or hair brush. These hygiene items will help your camper look and feel fresh. If your camper is only attending camp for a short period of time, you may wish to pack travel-size personal care items. If your camper is on medication, you'll need to pack that as well, or provide it to the summer camp nurse to dispense, depending on the camps guidelines.

Clothing, Outwear and Footwear

A variety of clothing is needed for summer camp, but in addition to everyday articles of clothing, every summer camper should pack a swimsuit, a rain jacket and an extra pair of running shoes. Since the weather can become cooler at night, it's important to have a heavier layer, like a sweatshirt, to put on. In case of inclement weather, a rain jacket and a change of shoes will surely come in handy. Since most summer camps offer some type of water activity, a bathing suit is essential. A hat is also essential to protect your camper from the sun.

Equipment and Supplies

When it comes to supplies for summer camp, bug spray and sunscreen are most important. Opt for a bug spray with DEET to offer your camper the best protection from bugs. Choose a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15, and look for a product that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Sunglasses are also important and can protect your camper's eyes from sun damage. Since summer campers spend most of their days outdoors, it's important to take proper sun safety precautions. Since campers often have bathrooms separate from sleeping quarters or participate in outdoor activities after dark, a flashlight can help a camper see his or her way in the night.
