A designer baby room needs to balance the immediate needs and safety of the baby with the family's decor style and taste. The space should match the rest of the house in some way, including color palette, style and arrangement. The room may be designed and decorated for a baby, but the designer sensibility can be brought in by creating a baby room that is a miniaturized version of the other rooms. Blend simple, elegant pieces with sophisticated, exotic or whimsical decor items to complete the designer look...continues below

Furniture

Invest in a stylish looking crib painted all black or white or a deep wood color, including mahogany brown. Convertible cribs that transform into a toddler bed and later a day bed will help you get more out of your crib dollar. The convertible cribs are often designed with a higher back than front, which adds a touch of design elegance to the crib. Add a skirt to the bottom of the crib. Buy a plush and oversized chair with matching ottoman. The chair can be used for nursing and story time and will add a sophistication to the baby room, as well as a place for mom or dad to sit.

Ceilings

Hang a canopy, tent or other draped fabric from the ceiling. The fabric may be attached to the center of the room in lieu of a light fixture to create a soft, tent'-like feel. Hang fabric from the ceiling in the shape of a wave by attaching the two ends and the middle to the ceiling with picture hanging hooks for a Moroccan look. Paint a realistic mural on the ceiling, either above the crib or above a play area in the room. Babies spend a lot of time looking up from their sleeping place and from the floor. Create a sky, an elaborate ceiling or faux skylight mural. Trade the baby light or ceiling fan for a crystal chandelier.

Walls and Color

Select paint hues that complement the colors in the rest of the house. Choose a two-color palette for an air of sophistication. A black and white color scheme is clean and modern and will match any other color added into the mix. Add one wall of decorative painting or patterned wallpaper to make it stand out. Chocolate brown will pair well with pink, sky blue or even orange. Paint a mural on the inside of a door or a small image that is the right height for a crawling baby to notice.
