How to Make Birthday Cakes for Kids' Parties

While many people buy cakes from the bakery for their kids' birthday parties, others want their child's cake to have that special, homemade touch. Making your own birthday cakes is a great way to save money as well...continues below

  1. Step 1

Decide on the size of your birthday cake. This handy guide will help you determine how large the cake needs to be: • One cake mix: Quarter-sheet cake serves 12 to 24. • Two cake mixes: Half-sheet cake serves up to 48. • Four cake mixes: Full-sheet cake serves up to 96.

  2. Step 2

Bake the cake according to directions. If you are an experienced baker, you know the toothpick trick. Insert one in the cake. If the toothpick is clean when you take it out, the cake is ready. If batter is on the toothpick, the cake isn't finished yet.

  3. Step 3

Icing your cake. Once you have taken the cake out and allowed it to thoroughly cool, you're ready to begin decorating. If you want to make the cake even, bend down so that you're at eye-level with the cake. Then use a bread knife to slice off between ¼ and ½ of an inch from the top of the cake. Use a spatula or large butter knife to icing the cake in the color you want. Use long, smooth strokes when applying the icing. When the icing layer is completely finished, you're ready to add other decorations.

  4. Step 4

Decorate the cake. Consider your child's party theme in order to decorate the cake. Cartoon characters and TV shows are typically popular. Purchase small figurines of these characters and place them on the cake. Your child can then play with these toys later. Use a star or flower tip on an icing bag to finish decorating the top of the cake. Use a small tip to write "Happy Birthday" and your child's name on the cake.
