How to Clean Rings

While soap, body lotion and hairspray go a long way in making you feel sparkly, they don't do much for your rings. Residue from products you use on your hair and skin can build up on your rings, giving them a lackluster appearance. Dust, dirt and grime can also get into the crevices of your rings, dirtying them and making them appear dull and unsightly. With a few minutes and some common household products you can give your rings their shine back...continues below

Step 1

Fill a small bowl with warm water and add a small amount of nonabrasive liquid dish soap. Place your ring into the soapy water. Let it sit for a few minutes.
Step 2

Use a small, soft brush and gently scrub your ring. Try to get into the small crevices, and if you ring has a stone, gently brush around the prongs of the stone.
Step 3

Close the drain of the sink and rinse your ring under running water for a few seconds. Turn the ring under the running water so that the entire ring gets rinsed clean.
Step 4

Dry your ring using a soft cloth. If you don't have a polishing cloth on hand, you can use any soft cloth to dry your rings. Avoid using paper towels or paper napkins that will leave tiny bits of paper on your ring.

If your ring is an heirloom or antique and you aren't sure how to clean it, check with a jeweler before cleaning it. There are some antique jewelry pieces that should not be cleaned using soap and water as it may ruin their finish.

Tips

Be sure to inspect your ring before you clean it. Look for loose prongs and stones. If your ring has a diamond in it, you can soak it in a mixture of warm water and ammonia instead of soapy water to restore its shine. If your ring is silver, you can use a nonabrasive silver polish to clean your ring instead of soapy water.
