How to Dress Professionally for Women
Learn to dress professionally, and you'll find it goes hand in hand with success in your career. Work from the top down and assess your wardrobe to achieve the look you'll need to be taken seriously as a professional person.
Step 1
Think conservative, and check out your blouses. Discard any that are ruffled or flashy; these are inappropriate for the workplace. Rule out anything that shows your midriff, as well as anything sleeveless (unless it will be worn under a blazer).
Step 2
Consider investing in a few high-quality blazers and suits. Choose colors that are neutral such as black, browns, navy and gray. A pinstripe always looks serious; if the color is contrasting, make sure it's not too bright.
Step 3
Wear your skirts no higher than 2 inches above your knees, and avoid skirts that are too full. Look for styles that streamline your figure and give you authority. Slacks are fine if part of a suit; avoid styles that are overly feminine or masculine.
Step 4
Accessorize your outfits carefully. The rule of thumb is to keep it simple. Minimize the jewelry you wear, and if you have piercings limit yourself to two small earrings per ear. Chains and beads are fine in moderation, as long as they enhance your outfit.
Step 5
Choose your shoes to complement your outfit. Reject any that show your heels and toes, and avoid heels that are higher than 2 inches. Match your handbag to your shoes. If possible, buy a stylish briefcase and forgo a handbag altogether.
