How to Find the Sex of Your Baby
A pregnant woman can find out the sex of her unborn baby.
While some expecting parents want the sex of their baby to be a surprise, many parents do want to know the sex. The good news is that if you're one of those parents who do want to know, you can try a few things to find out your baby's sex while you are still pregnant. While no method of finding out your baby's sex prior to giving birth is 100 percent accurate, some methods have a higher degree of accuracy than others.
Step 1
Inquire about chorionic villus sampling. Ask your prenatal health care provider if you are a good candidate for CVS, which is usually performed when you are between week 8 and week 13 in your pregnancy.
Step 2
Ask if an amniocentesis can be done. Consult with your prenatal health care provider about having an amniocentesis. According to the Childcare website, an amniocentesis is usually performed between week 9 and week 18 of your pregnancy.
Step 3
Schedule an ultrasound. An ultrasound can be scheduled through your prenatal health care provider or through an independent ultrasound company. According to Joseph Woo of the OB-Ultrasound website, by the time you are at week 20, a technician should be able to determine a baby's gender by ultrasound.
Warnings
- If you are considering chorionic villus sampling or an amniocentesis, you should be aware that both tests have a small risk of miscarriage.
- Most prenatal tests aren't primarily done to determine gender. During the test, however, your baby's gender can be determined.
