Makeup Tips for Dark Skin

Makeup can enhance and beautify dark skin tones.

Many women like to apply makeup to enhance their appearance. Dark skin often presents makeup dilemmas. The color of your skin can dictate your beauty and makeup routine. Some shades of makeup that show up well on lighter skin may tend to fade or seem to disappear on darker skin tones. Enhance your beauty by considering your skin's coloring and your individual features. Emphasize your deep skin tones with makeup that flatters and compliments your looks and your style.

Foundation

Look for a foundation color that closely matches your skin tone. According to The Knot website, some African-American women have lighter skin on the cheeks and darker shades along the brow and chin. Using three different shades of foundation will enable you to correct your skin tones on each area of your face. Use your medium tone to cover blemishes and provide color across your face, while using the darker shade to create natural shadows and the lighter shade to provide gentle highlights.

Powder

Avoid tinted shades of facial powder. Allow your darker skin tones to appear beautiful and natural by applying a translucent powder that does not add yellow, red or blue tones. Apply this over your foundation makeup or use instead of a foundation. Apply your powder evenly with the soft touch of a large, puffy brush.

Blush

Although many dark-skinned women prefer to pass on cheek color, this makeup product can enhance your dark skin. Experiment with colors to find the most natural shade for your skin tone. For very dark skin, try a deep shade of plum or currant. For a lighter shade of brown, use a bronzer in apricot or rose. Blend well to create a natural appearance.

Lipstick

Do not be shy when it comes to choosing daring colors of lipstick. Your dark skin enables you to flaunt deep colors. The Knot suggests dark-skinned women use lip colors in shades of burgundy and blackberry. Softer shades, such as caramel and soft brown, can enhance your lips without overwhelming your other features.
