Mother's Day Craft Projects for Kids

Use beads to help children make necklaces for Mom.

Help children make Mother's Day special for their mom and grandmothers. Even the smallest children can make simple crafts to either decorate their house with or to give their mother as a present. If you are a mom yourself, let the children spend quality time with Dad, making delightful crafts for a Mother's Day surprise.

Cards and Coupons

Hallmark may think it has cornered the market on Mother's Day cards, but all a child needs to do to give his mom a heartfelt, homemade card is fold a piece of construction paper in half and write "I Love You, Mom" on it. Older children can make more elaborate cards, including cards with 3-D details, such as beads, or cards that pop-up when you open them. Children can also make coupons for mom that she can redeem for things, such as a hug, doing chores around the house or breakfast in bed.

Set A Pretty Table

If you are having a Mother's Day brunch or other meal at your house, get your children involved in making crafts to decorate the table. Small children can make simple napkin rings by twisting or braiding a few pieces of pipe cleaner together. They can also make personalized place mats in honor of their mother and grandmother. If you have enough time beforehand, purchase a kit that allows a child to decorate a dinner plate or mug. Have the child draw something for Mother's day, then send the drawing off to be printed on the plate. Present the custom plate to mom or grandma during the meal on Mother's Day.

A Picture Is Worth a 1,000 Words

Buy inexpensive picture frames and help the child decorate them for mom. Children can glue ribbons, glitter or sequins to the frames or draw or paint words and images around the frame's edges. Place a photograph of the mother and child in the frame or help the child hand write a poem and place it in the frame. You can also press flowers, such as wildflowers, that grow near your home and place those in the frame.

Jewelry for Mom

Help children thread large beads onto a piece of string or a chain to make a necklace for Mother's Day. Older children may be interested in making friendship bracelets out of embroidery floss for their mom. Children can also string candy onto a necklace for a mom who enjoys sweets. Glue small portraits of each child onto buttons and thread onto elastic string to make a bracelet moms will love.

Decorative Crafts

Help children paint or decorate votive candle holders for Mother's Day. You can use the votives to decorate the table or wrap up and give to mom or grandma as a present. Use glass paint to spruce up plain juice glasses or any other glassware. You can also help children paint smooth rocks and glue googly eyes or pipe cleaners onto the rocks to make ladybug or butterfly paper weights to give mom.
