Updos & Popular Hairstyles

Pile your hair into a sleek chignon.

Wear your hair swept off your face in an elegant updo for a fancy occasion, such as a wedding or a night out with your partner. The updo remains a popular hairstyle because it has so many different variations. If you want a trendier look, you can wear your hair halfway up or leave tendrils of your hair loose in the front.

Half-Up Updo

Pulling your hair halfway up into a bun or ponytail looks youthful and sleek at the same time. Avoid looking like you've just stepped out of middle school by teasing the front of your hair gently before pulling it up, so that it does not lie flat against your scalp. Twist the portion of hair you are pulling up into a loose bun or braid it and then loop it into a bun. Add a touch of glamor to the hairstyle by attaching a large sparkling or floral barrette at the top of the bun.

Loose Updo

Depending on the shape of your face, you may be able to part your hair in the center and sweep it back off your face into a low, loose bun. Center parts flatter people with rectangular faces. If your face is round, you may want to try parting your hair to one side and pulling it back. Don't pull the hair up too tightly. A few loose tendrils add an element of youth to an updo.

Chignon

If you want to look like a movie star from the 1940s, try pulling your hair back into a tight chignon. Brush the front of your hair back so that it is smooth and sleek or use curlers in it to create a gentle wave. Make the chignon by gathering your hair into a ponytail at the base of your neck. Wrap the ponytail into a coil and secure to your scalp with bobby pins. Positioning the chignon slightly off center adds visual interest. You can also replace the bobby pins with hair chopsticks to make your updo stand out.
