Very Early Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy

Some early signs may indicate a baby is in your future.

Your body undergoes many changes during pregnancy. Although you may notice that your pregnancy symptoms become more pronounced as your pregnancy progresses, early symptoms can be gradual and difficult to discern. Unless you know what to look for, you may dismiss some early pregnancy signs as normal discomforts or symptoms of other conditions. If you are wondering if you might be pregnant, watch for some early signs and symptoms that may indicate pregnancy.

Minor Cramping and Bleeding

Watch for the appearance of vaginal spotting early in your pregnancy. Known as implantation bleeding, light spotting occurs when the fertilized egg affixes itself to the inside of your uterus. Although not all women experience this sign of pregnancy, you might notice some spotting or light bleeding slightly earlier than your expected period. This may also cause some slight cramping in your lower abdomen. The Mayo Clinic advises that your cramping may resemble menstrual cramping.

Breast Changes

Early pregnancy can cause your breasts to become tender and sore. You may notice an occasional, tingly feeling in your breasts as early as two weeks following conception. Your breasts may feel enlarged and heavier than normal. Look for changes in the color of the areolas, the area of skin around your nipples. Your areolas may appear darker and have small bumps, known as Montgomery's tubercles.

Feeling Tired

High levels of progesterone, needed to build your baby's placenta, can cause you to feel fatigued. This hormone can make you sleepy, while a decrease in blood pressure and blood sugar might cause you to feel drained of energy.

Frequent Bathroom Visits

The University of Maryland Medical Clinic suggests that early water weight gain can cause an increase in body fluids and cause you to urinate more frequently. Many women notice an increased frequency of urination about six to eight weeks after conception.

Missing Your Period

Your rising hormone levels prevent your uterus from shedding its lining, causing a cessation of your normal monthly menstruation. Some women may experience light periods or mistake the implantation bleeding for a menstrual period. Occasionally, tension, stress or hormonal problems can disrupt your cycle, mimicking this early symptom of pregnancy.

Nausea

Known as morning sickness, nausea can occur anytime during the day or night. This feeling of queasiness can cause you to vomit. Morning sickness often begins as early as two to eight weeks after conception and usually diminishes as your pregnancy continues.
