Nine people were injured Sunday afternoon after a rare ‘cloud to ground’ lightning strike at Venice Beach in Southern California.
Eight people were taken to the hospital, including a 15-year-old. One of the adults was in grave condition, while another was listed in critical, according to LAFD spokeswoman Katherine Main. The six other patients were reported to be in stable condition.
Witnesses tweeted they saw a huge bolt of lightning strike the area.
It appears the lightning didn’t just hit Venice. Earlier today, according to the LA Times, a man was injured after being struck by lightning in Catalina Island. They also reported that lightning ignited several brush fires and knocked out power.
Lightning was also being blamed for a power outage in Redondo Beach that left nearly 300 hundred customers without power, according to Southern California Edison.
“Stay indoors if you hear thunder until it passes,” the Weather Service tweeted.
Please be safe out there.
