- At Home
Everyone is told how expensive it is to have a baby. Between the cost of formula, diapers, and new clothes, you’re then also supposed to be saving for your little one's college tuition!
But no one warned me how much it would cost for my son to play sports! After my husband came home from buying shoulder pads, face mask, a practice jersey and pants - I couldn’t believe how much my son’s first season of football was going to cost us. How do parents do this with more than one child playing a sport?
There has to be ways to save on sports equipment and gear. I hate paying full price for things, and I don’t care how much money you have everyone likes a good deal! So here are some ways that I have found to save next time I need to buy sports gear for my kids:
We had no idea the cost of sports gear, and just went to a chain sports store to buy everything all at once. Just like with grocery shopping, or back to school shopping you need to get a plan together and research where the best place to buy everything is.
I buy my workout clothes at stores like Marshalls, Nordstrom’s Rack, and T.J. Maxx. I didn’t even think they had kids’ stuff but they DO!!! You can find everything from Adidas and Nike Soccer shorts to name brand sneakers, and Under Armour shirts perfect for under kids' football jerseys. I found the same pair of Under Armour cleats we just bought for my son 25 dollars cheaper!!!
They also sell some sporting equipment. I found every type of ball from soccer to volleyballs, even tennis rackets and mouth guards. Asking the sales people when they get sporting good shipments in stock is also another good idea to save you time from searching.
Second-Hand Sport Stores
In our town, it’s called “Play It Again Sports," although in your town it might be called something different. A second-hand sports store is another place to go to buy sporting gear. And if your son or daughter decided they don’t want to play lacrosse this season, and you have all the equipment, you can sell it back at a store like this too. It's also a good place to buy discounted bikes, skateboards, roller-skates, or ice skates.
Trade With Friends
Asking your mom friends who have kids a size or two larger than yours is a great way to save on sports clothing. You can make a trade, or buy their used sporting gear. If they aren’t using it, I am sure they will be happy to get rid of it so it's not taking up space in their garage.
eBay or Craigslist
My friend finds amazing deals on eBay. She gets the cutest clothes for herself, and toys and dresses for her girls. If you are good with finding bargains online, it's a great way to find used and new sporting equipment, and clothing.
I think children playing sports teaches them to live a healthy lifestyle, make new friends, and learn teamwork. It is one of the best things you can do for your child. There are so many different sports out there, watching the Olympics shows us that! So I hope these tips help you before overspending on your child’s next sports season.
