To Each Her Own
As a mom, I am constantly receiving parenting advice that I didn’t ask for. The fact is that motherhood is so incredible and so wonderful that we can’t help but dish out advice about what works best. Well, I believe that we all have our own unique and special way of parenting and that it is important to do what comes naturally to us.
Don’t get me wrong, when I found out that I would be having twins, I read every book, manual and article that I could get my hands on to get ready for motherhood. But as the days got closer, I realized that as much as you try to prepare, you can never really be ready. While learning the basics is great, it really comes down to who you are and how you want to mother. It is a beautiful experience for you and your child.
My personal journey as a mother began with my twins. I knew that there would inherently be a strong bond between my little ones, so it was important to me to instill a sense of individualism in each child. The fact that they are not the same sex does make it easier for me to avoid typical “twin mom” behavior such as dressing them in matching outfits. Matching outfits can be cute, but I think it is important for them to begin dressing according to their personalities (this again is just my opinion).
I love to empower my kids to be their own person. Yes, they are twins and they have an amazing and beautiful bond but they are always strong individuals first. I want them each to have a strong sense of self confidence.
Don’t be afraid to be who you are! As a parent, it’s all about understand your kids and making decisions that are truly best for them. Whether it is a decision about outfits or schools and activities, I would encourage mothers to do what they feel is right for them. Every child is different, which means every mother has different decisions to make. We all make mistakes that we learn from, but how we each handle those mistakes is unique to the individual. There is no wrong or right way; there is just your way. Instead of judging others we can just say, “To each her own!”
Motherhood is the best job, while at the same time one of the most difficult jobs in the world. So to all you moms out there - keep following your instinct. It will serve you well. And don’t forget to pat yourself on the back regularly, you’ve earned it!
