Brooke Burke: My Slim Down Secrets

Daytime television feels more like Fitness 101 this month. Everywhere I look, I hear about a new fitness fad, a quick fix or some kind of "get in shape fast" scheme - which is something I've never believed in. January is the time when everybody wants to get back in shape (or get in shape for the first time). Oh, leave it to those good old New Year's Resolutions.I've never quite understood ... Read Post...

Yes! Yes! Yes!

This morning I was so inspired. To my right was my daughter and my other daughter was close to me on my left. It was an emotional workout as I sat on my favorite bike at Soul Cycle.  Maybe it was PMS, maybe fatigue from maxing out my work out, but for sure it was true love.  The family fitness experience has been motivating and inspiring for all of my brood. The reality of being ... Read Post...

Brooke Burke: My Rules for Healthy Vacation Eating

My recent family vacation was the perfect set up for 5 lbs of decadence and too many spirits.  Since my team booked a healthy cover shoot for Shape magazine the DAY AFTER my return, I knew I had to find the balance between enjoyment and discipline. You know that fine line between splurging and total indulgence.  Worst of all I was on a family cruise where you can literally eat 24hrs a day.  I’m ... Read Post...

Ingredients 3 fennel bulbs 4 heads of frisee (you can substitute endives if you want) 5 tangerines   Directions Thinly slice the fennel bulbs and wash.  Keep the stalks for your water pitcher! Test Results

Thank you so much for all your love, support and positive feedback regarding my thyroid biopsy.  My results are a bit vague, to say the least. My biopsy reports came back  “Atypical.”  I have been doing A LOT of research and I am still learning, but to the best of my knowledge what that means is more doctors, second opinions and more tests in the next weeks.   Read Post...

My Beautiful Family Weekend

Sometimes a familiar place becomes one to cherish and remember. David and I took the kids to Vegas, yes kids can do Sin City!  We had the BEST time doing all the touristy stuff that we probably would have missed on our own.  The kids had a blast! My sister and niece joined us. We all dreamed of swimming with dolphins, who would have thought our wish would be granted in Nevada! Read Post...

Giving Back

"Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing."  - Mother Teresa I think most of us hope to raise a child who is generous of spirit. Being charitable is something that is super important to me.  I think it is something you feel organically and every so often (hopefully) something moves you to make a difference. Some people are born this way, but most children who grow up to be giving, altruistic adults do so because, as children, they were taught the value of these traits. Read Post...

Endings and New Beginnings

As summer nears and the school year ends, I find myself a bit emotional as I watch my children hit landmarks. Some are racing to the finish line, one struggles to get there, another enjoys every day of the countdown.  My oldest is graduating elementary school and prepping for 7th grade. The birds and the bees are flying close above and Mother Nature is staring her in the face.  She grew up so fast. Now she’s wearing my shoes, sharing my bathing suits (not the itsy bitsy ones) and talking about boys…oh boy! Read Post...

Chimpanzee, God and Faith

Sometimes my children stop me in my tracks and make me think. Throughout the years, they’ve come up with questions that I have no answers to - philosophies that shock me. Behind the Scenes at Dancing with the Stars, Week 2

Well, it's official, we have kicked off  Dancing With The Stars Season 14, and I think it is the highest level of dancing we've ever seen.  All our couples survived two nights of dancing and one sad elimination, saying goodbye too soon to Martina XXX.  I remember too well when I screwed up my jive and forgot the routine….so awful!  One bad dance proved last night that it could be the last. Tech-ville: How Much is Too Much?

I’m in flight to NYC, this time my babies are buckled next to me.  They are so excited to be taking an early spring break and heading out for an adventure with David and me.  They really are great travelers and finally at an age that they can enjoy the city.  I’ll take them on the cheesy Central Park carriage ride that holds many types of memories for all of my children.  Shay will for sure want to see the Empire State Building and search for King Kong.  He hopes that I bring Kong home or at least a pic every time I’m working in the city. Dear Martin Luther King, Jr.

As if I didn’t have enough on my plate, my responsibilities now include: booking groomers, turning off heat lights at night, buying fresh kale, worms and crickets, cleaning up dead mice, and pooper scooper duties.  The last of which is my all time favorite. Thank you for sharing. Little Rain is with me pretending to be my assistant. I brought my son in the office with me the other day, of course he was not as good as Rain! Read Post...

Proud Mommy, Proud Kid

Thank you so much for all the wonderful feedback on my last blog. Sometimes we need little life reminders. I am always happy to share my light bulbs and, of course, my struggles. My 9-year-old blew me away on Saturday. She asked if she could make a lemonade stand in our neighborhood. I had to schlep my other 3 kids to b-day parties, dance class, etc, so I couldn’t give her the time she was hoping for (what else is new?). Read Post...

Beauty is Everywhere

Mexico in Malibu

Since Dancing with the Stars wrapped, I totally checked out of my chaotic work world and checked back in to my chaotic Family Ville. The past month totally wiped me out! Too much work and traveling, not enough sleep and too much time away from my kids is never a good thing for any of us. It was a challenging month to say the least, and I am so happy that it’s over. I spent my holiday hanging with the family at home, cooking, swimming, and visiting with a few friends. It was a great weekend and the perfect teaser for summer. Read Post...

Finale Week at DWTS- And I'm Exhausted!

It’s finale week at Dancing With The Stars, and in a strange way I feel as exhausted as many of the dancers. I remember what the road to the finals was like. It’s a thrilling time, physically grueling and indescribably challenging. Everyone is stressed, their bodies are worn out, and just when you feel as though you have nothing left, you are preparing the most difficult and the most important dance of your life. It was a crazy time and here I am again in season 12, but this time I get to cheer on someone else! Read Post...

20 Things You Don’t Know About Me

I like to cry to sappy love songs. My children’s names tell a story: Neriah Shae, Sierra Sky, Heaven Rain, Shaya Braven. S’mores are my favorite dessert. I have fought an 8 foot crocodile in Australia, swam with Sharks, jumped out of airplanes and flew in a rocket. I’m an adrenaline junkie! Minty gum makes me gag! A Mother's Work is Never Good Enough

Mother’s Day came and went too fast… It’s my favorite day for many reasons. The obvious is first; being a mother is my greatest life achievement. But it’s also a day when being selfish is allowed and hearing thank you is to be expected. Every mother knows we don’t hear that often enough. My day started with breakfast in bed, prepared by David and decorated with handmade gifts from my kids. Read Post...

My Historic Weekend at the White House

I just finished watching President Obama speak. I am wondering how I will address the news of bin Laden’s death to my children. Surely it will be the talk of school, and they will have many questions. I stood in the West Wing just days ago during my tour of the White House. I cannot imagine how preoccupied President Obama must have been as he delivered his toast at last night’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner. Hopefully, the laughter of the 2000 plus people that filled the room allowed our president to escape for a moment. Read Post...

Mommy Found the Easter Bunny!

We took the family away this weekend for a quick local vacation. It’s finally starting to feel like spring, which called for the perfect Easter holiday getaway. Spring break is always challenging for our family because of the different schools and schedules. We never seem to all be off at the same time. I love local vacations, no airports and no time wasted in travel. La Costa is one of my favorite southern California resorts and has one of my favorite rooms in the US. Push Yourself to the Limit

It finally feels like summer in Malibu. I felt guilty watching the blizzard in Denver this morning on the news as David and I and our Shepherds headed out for a hike. Today we decided to do something different and we rediscovered a waterfall hike that we explored when we first stared dating. Read Post...

The Power Of Giving

I'm in flight, on my way home from an action packed holiday weekend with David and our youngest kids. We all flew back to CT, my home town for my cousin’s wedding. Four minutes after I said goodnight on air during Dancing With The Stars, I was in a car, eyelash glitter and all, rushing to catch a red-eye flight with my family. Ambitious was an understatement, but we made it! It was a tough night especially the road trip from NY to get us to CT in the wee hours of the morning. I can't remember the last time I pulled an all nighter! It’s never easy, but the kids were amazing and the schlep was well worth it. Thanksgiving Blessings

I had an amazing Thanksgiving with my relatives in CT. There was a moment at the dinner table when my Uncle was making a toast and got choked up. Thirty-Something...

So I just had a birthday, which was truthfully a pretty lame day.  I’ve never been big on fussing over my own celebration, but this one was particularly dreadful!  Glad it’s gone which brings me to my next thought: Should I be thirty-something or 35ish?  Both seem to have a nice ring to them.  What is it with us women about age anyway? Kudos for the Dads

I was watching The View the other day, an episode on Female Addictions.  I was very affected by one woman who spoke about her childhood and the way the absence of a man, her father, changed her path.  Her parents divorced when she was 13 and she shut her father out of her life.  During the tender, impressionable years she realized that with no example, no role model of what a male/female relationship should look like, she did not know how to love or be loved by a man.  She became a porn star during her college years and developed a sex addiction.  So sad Read Post...

I just finished a novel that sadly is the first book I have read cover to cover in many years.  I haven’t been able to take the time.  That sounds really lame, but I am too tired at night, I have been working very hard the past 6 months writing my own book, and what little “Me Time” I do have is usually spent doing other things like Pilates, the gym, or beauty stuff.  I totally enjoyed losing myself in someone else’s journey or in the case of The Help, the journey of many women.  I loved the book and it make me think a lot about my own Read Post...

Backstage with Dancing With The Stars

I had such a great time at DWTS last night. I took my Mom, Lisa Rosenblatt and our girlfriend Suzie. It amazed me how it felt like just yesterday that I was waiting backstage to perform my last dance.  I could feel the nerves in the ballroom even though I was in the audience. Read Post...

Sad Goodbyes

I’m getting ready to leave town again, but this time without my 2 older girls. I’m having a really tough time. Home Grown

In the past month, I’ve eaten more pasta, pizza, bread, desserts and consumed more red wine than I store in my cellar at home!!!  Now I’m back on track and determined be as healthy as possible for the rest of the summer.  Notice I said healthy, not skinny!!! Sometimes I like to shock my body, and that’s exactly what I did while traveling this summer.  I ate it all and enjoyed every moment.  Problem is I didn’t really like how I was feeling. Read Post...

Body Image

I had an important mommy conversation with one of my close girlfriends the other day.  We were talking about our daughters and their own body image.  I must admit that the conversation began when we were criticizing our own flaws and the extra lbs we’ve both put on vacationing and indulging this summer. This is easy to do when dishing with my pals, but when we notices our girls playing close by, our bitch session became a whisper.  Read Post...

Brooke Burke: 14 Sleepless Nights, 12 Airports and One Magical Vacay

It’s half-past eight on a Friday in Paris. My four children are packed into our van on our final trip to the airport. They are singing their favorite Justin Beiber song, while I shoot a video. The hum of their voices is our farewell song to the 2 week adventure we are all sad to see end. It’s the same scene I know on many days in our truck back home, but today the atmosphere is different and there is harmony. We are on our way home from our European family adventure. Three destinations, 15 bags and the 6 people that make up my brood. At times it felt like another version of National Lampoons, The Charvet Wanabees go to Europe. One of the funniest scenes is us at the Passport check-in. 3 Charvets, David with his French passport, 2 Fishers, and one Burke. Me being the outcast, I knew I looked more like the nanny than the one responsible for all of the children. It’s always a surprise to the one asking, “They’re all yours?!?” Read Post...

Paradise in Porto Cervo

Today has been the most spectacular part of our Italian journey.  I am sitting on a terrace at a dear friend’s villa in Sardinia overlooking the Porto Cervo Harbor.  The yachts are rolling in, traffic is scarce, and there is a peace in the wind that is blowing through us.  This is exactly what I dreamed of when I imagined us leaving our paradise in Malibu and taking this long awaited family vacation.  Read Post...

“Let every meal be a celebration”Harmonious colors set the table, awakening senses I strive to experience at home.  There is a personal touch here and many small gestures that make the difference.  The possibility of many friends gathering and letting go of our norm and accepting what a new country offers is what makes, in my opinion, an International vacation enjoyable. We survived the 10 hour flight to Europe, a 4 hour layover and a road trip to our Villa.  Surprisingly, this trip was more difficult than the one I made with Rain and Shaya to visit David in Africa. Brooke Burke: Going Far Away to Stay Grounded

We survived the 10 hour flight to Europe, a 4 hour layover and a road trip to our Villa. Surprisingly, this trip was more difficult than the one I made with Rain and Shaya to visit David in Africa. Afternoon flights to Europe are the most difficult. Even though the redeye seems disruptive, trust me it is the ONLY way to go when traveling abroad. My kids were up the entire flight. We arrived in the morning Paris time, which means we all missed an entire night’s sleep. During the layover in Paris, my son decided to make the seating area a track, while his sisters enjoyed timing his speed round and round! All I was thinking was, “Yes, wear him out!!!” Neriah finally crashed on her sweatshirt/makeshift pillow across the cleanest spot she could find, and the rest of us (including Rain) rocked on. Rain became our copilot as David and I made sense of a VERY crude map and Italian directions to our countryside villa. Good news is we made it, and even better, it was well worth the schlep… Read Post...

Family Vacation!

I was just watching a segment on the Today Show about relaxing on family vacation… That seems like wishful thinking with my brood- although that is exactly what I am hoping for. Miss. Rain

My 3 year old keeps blowing me away.  Not only because she is the most amazing kid on the planet, as I am sure most of your children are, but she is full of incredible one-liners.  I wish I had a book of all the questions my children have asked me over the years.  Maybe it’s only the parents that get a kick out of our children’s inquiring minds, but I swear I am in love with this stage of development.  I wish I could bottle her curiosity, naivety and innocence.  I ‘d Read Post...

Brooke Reports on the Gulf Disaster...

Immediately after I committed to getting involved with Blue Seals, David and I set out for Louisiana. I needed to see with my own eyes what was going on down there so we could figure out a way to contribute. It saddened me to hear some of the Twitter feedback when I tweeted that we were off to explore the Gulf and help with the oil spill. Someone actually wrote that my involvement sounded like a “publicity ploy.” My first reaction was disappointment at how jaded people are, then I thought: So what! If I can use myself and my celebrity as a “publicity ploy” to bring attention to a desperate situation, I am totally willing to do just that. So off we went, not knowing what the days ahead would show us. Read Post...

Our Father's Day

OMG!!! I have 4 days to pull it together for Father’s Day. I miss my Dad around this time of year. There is something so comforting about knowing that someone is on your side, wherever, whenever, no matter what. Brooke Burke: What Warms My Heart...

This morning I reached into my homemade Mother’s day card that Neriah, my 10 yr old made for me, and pulled out one of my daily messages. “You’re funny,” it reads. I love this gift she gave me, it took so much time, creativity and thought to make it, and every day I get to read something positive about myself. What a great gift! Especially for us moms who don’t hear that kind of stuff enough. I actually didn’t know she thought I was funny, it lightened up my morning, and made me think that maybe I am. It made me smile and think about how my daughter perceives me. I am remembering the work game I played in my car with my girls a while ago: "How You Can Learn From Your Kids!" It was an amazing experience to hear what my children REALLY thought about me and I learned some things as well. Also a great way to pass time in the car. Give it a try, it just may surprise you. Writing for me is so therapeutic. People often ask what the last book I read was. Well, I cannot remember the last time I finished a book. I feel like there is too much to do to devote that time. Honestly, if I slow down long enough to read, I will probably fall asleep. I’d rather write than read these days. I’m super busy working on chapters of my own book, The Naked Mom, which will release next year. As I write it, I am dissecting lots of things about my life, my path, and my not so traditional views. I am thinking of many things that have affected my life, the people in it and the choices that I have made. It’s amazing what perspective I have looking back at certain times and how different it is from the perspective I had while I was knee deep in it. Read Post...

Don’t get the wrong idea…but I’m lying in bed with my girlfriend, tweeting and watching American Idol.   All of our kids are on Spring Break and the seven of them are nestled in the theatre eating popcorn and watching old school Looney Toons.  We decided not to spend any money, skip the traveling hassle; packing up the family for the week and all the stress that comes with it.  So we are having a Staycation at my house, and I couldn’t have planned it any better!    Read Post...

Like Mother Like Daughter

I read an interesting article today that really hit home for me. It was about how our lives are impacted by our relationships.  Then I started thinking about how much our children are impacted by our every move. I’ve been thinking a lot about the examples I set for my children and how it affects their lives.  My divorce, my current relationship, and the way I deal with stress, my relationship with my mother, my friendships, my value system, my work, etc. Read Post...

Vegas, BABY!

I’m lying in bed next to my sick daughter who finally passed out.  I played nurse all day.  I didn¹t realize how much skill it took to manage theviolent storm of sneezes she delivered every 5 minutes ALL day long! I miss the days when we could give our toddlers cold medicine.  Boy has medicine changed; now for the first 4 years you have to tough it out. Understatement today! Read Post...

Friendship and Doing The Best You Can

As mothers we are always trying to do our best but it always feels like someone else is doing it better. On days when I miss-schedule one of my kid’s activities, or I couldn’t get home in time for dinner, or I couldn’t drum up enough energy to dance one more song with my daughter, I feel guilty. Safety Plans and Your Family

While all the trauma is happening in Haiti, I have been thinking about my own family and most households in our country. Today at the gym, while I was on the treadmill watching the news, I saw the tornado alert for Southern CA. The newscaster was telling everyone what to do, where to go for shelter and how to be as safe as possible in your own home. I started thinking about natural disaster and what I would do if I couldn’t get to my children… What if they were in school? Read Post...

Sleep 101

I’m on day #3 of my new health and fitness plan. So far so good.  I’m totally sore from working out, but I’m sticking to it.  I have to admit that eating green and totally healthy doesn’t make you feel great for the first few days, you actually feel full and bloated from all the veggies and frequent trips to the ladies room can get annoying but if you can get over the hump, it is sooo worth it. Holiday Dinner and Drama

DWTS - The Semi-Final Stress

IT'S MONDAY NIGHT, THE SEMI-FINALS OF DANCING WITH THE STARS.  I remember what was going through my mind this time last year.  I visited Derek and Joanna in the studio last week to give them some advice and help them work on the out-of- control nerve issues.  Stress is the demon on Dancing With the Stars, and I knew that nothing I could say was going to comfort Joanna tonight as she preps for show time.  Read Post...

Family Dinners

There are certain family traditions that I remember as a child that have become an important part of my family today.  I remember every night at 5:00 sharp was family dinnertime.  That was our time to be together in one room and catch up.  My sister and I traded the responsibilities of setting and clearing the table.  My mother worked and my father was home with us and so he prepared the meals.  It was hardly a traditional scene, but in many ways it was a very important tradition that has been carried on.  Read Post...

Parenting Fears

A dear friend of mine, Mr. X gave me the nicest compliment yesterday, it touched me and made me think.  He is recently married, to a lovely woman, who wants children very much, and he is still a little scared.  He told David and I that we have inspired him to have children and that we have helped him to see what is possible.   He intimately shared many of his parenting fears with us over dinner.  He was so vulnerable and honest and it opened up a very deep conversation.  I love those, the ones that make you think…  Read Post...

Parents are often difficult to raise

A long time ago….. I was a different mother than I am today.  Actually that made me sound ancient!  What I mean is through each child, I have grown, evolved, and changed.  What I realize today is that PARENTS ARE OFTEN DIFFICUT TO RAISE. Setting Boundaries

Tonight we had a family meeting to set some new boundaries.  I decided to revert to my old “behavior chart” system.  It’s a colorful artsy chart that the kids love making, but it encourages good behavior and is based on a reward system.  I make a monthly calendar and together we write down all the things that need improving, like talking back, cleaning up after oneself, getting ready for bed on time, eating healthy, doing things the first time asked, making beds, brushing teeth, being kind, being generous, etc.  Then I write down all the routine things in Read Post...

I have had a hard time getting inspired to blog lately.  Wondering if there is anything exciting in my life to share or anything significant to write about.  I sometimes like to share my funny experiences, or events that I have learned or grown from.  This last week has been pretty dull, if you can imagine that with four children.  I have felt like I am just going through the motions, cooking, driving, doing homework, putting out emotional fires, reading, loving, the ordinary day to day stuff.  Read Post...

KEEPING IT HEALTHY AT HOME - My kitchen feels like a restaurant.

So breakfast today felt like a restaurant in my own kitchen! Everyone seems to like different things in my house. Eggs, cereal, fresh bagels, etc.  My kids have never been easy fast frozen food eaters.  I am happy from a healthy stand point for that, but many days, it can be exhausting! My oldest would love it if I made her an egg white, tomato, onion, zucchini, omelet, with sausage every morning. Who the hell has time for that with four kids, two which have to be out the door for school at 7:45!!! Read Post...

There's A Bitch Living Inside All Of Us

There’s a bitch living inside all of us! The question is: What to do with her?!? Do you contain her, pretend she doesn’t exist, try to control her, or simply just let the dogs out… Ever wonder what the people closest to you really think of you.  If the word Bitch is coming up too frequently, (if you have anyone honest enough in your life to tell you the truth), you may want to do a little personal house work. Work, Life And Mixed Family Challenges

I’m sitting in a café on Montana Ave - enjoying a café latte and savoring every moment that I have alone.  I just finished my Pilates class, my only other time by myself… I actually had to leave the house with my laptop and escape to a café to try to get some work done.  I cannot escape at home to take care of business, and I have too much guilt if I am not tending to the kids. Aaahhh the work/life challenge!  I feel like there is so little of me to go around at home, I cannot possibly allow my children to compete with my computer. Read Post...

Don't Starve, Eat More, Lose Weight

Many people are writing to me and asking my advice on losing weight, staying fit, and dropping a few dress sizes for summer. I am not an expert, but I’ll share what I do and hopefully you can skip those crazy crash diets that never last. 90% of being fit is what you put in your mouth. Some cardio won’t hurt either. Don’t starve, EAT MORE and lose weight! Read Post...

Get What You Put In

It was so intense sitting in the audience of the Dancing With the Stars finale last night. The energy and the nerves ran high in the ballroom.  So much goes into the decision making process for the free style.  It truly is the opportunity to showcase everything that each contestant has learned during the season.  Read Post...

Go Green--Food That Is!

It was a rough weekend! Rain was sick with a very high fever, and needed me by her side every moment. She’s one of those kids that will NOT take medicine, and when I don’t give her the option, she throws it up. Kinda defeats the purpose. So, it was a long few days… Read Post...

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Today was beauty day for me. Usually I would spend it by myself, doing girly things like my hair, nails, shopping, maybe lunch with a girlfriend, etc.  But my daughter had no school today, so she joined me and it was hardly a day of pampering. Actually, I enjoyed being with her because we rarely get alone time together.  The older my children get, the harder it is to give them one on one time because they command so much attention.  We used to joke in our family that with your first and second child it is man-to-man defense, after three and four, it becomes zone defense. How You Can Learn From Your Kids!

I want to share a blog with you that I wrote for Baboosh Baby several months ago. I received so much positive feedback and it was such a great experience for me and my girls that I am sharing this information again... If you ever want to learn something about yourself, ask the people close to you what they think of you. Although the truth may hurt sometimes, if your loved ones can be honest, the constructive criticism can be fascinating! Read Post...

Mothers Day Blog

Thankfully someone decided to call a National Holiday and celebrate us, because we sure don’t get any appreciation the rest of the year!!!! JK - I hope everyone had a Happy Mother’s Day. Read Post...

My Hectic Day

I have had such a hectic day (not that most of mine aren’t a bit crazy with my four kids). I’m realizing that ultimate organization is my only way to survive. I actually forgot to write down a play date that was scheduled last week and totally spaced on picking up my daughter’s friend. Fortunately the school called within five minutes, so I was back tracking with apologies! It has been one of those days, it’s already 4:00 and my night is still young. Read Post...

My Stay-At-Home Weekend

Friday night was David’s birthday. We decided to stay in so I made his favorite dinner. Grilled rib eye, butter lettuce French-dressed salad, baked asparagus, tomatoes and onions in balsamic dressing, topped off with his favorite custard cake from Le Petit Four on Sunset. The girls and I put as many candles as we could fit, for luck not years, and we hoped all his wishes would come true. My sister was in town visiting from Florida, so she and my mother joined us. It was simple and sweet, family style. I gave him a rose gold dog tag engraved with PAPA on one side and AMOUR on the other. Read Post...

Romance or Sleeping Pill?

David and I took our first trip alone without the kids to NY. Even though it was a working, press trip for both of us, the fact that we were kid-free, was amazing.  Normally a 24 hr trip to NY would be a pain in the ass, but these days, adult time is hard to come by.  Read Post...
