My daughter informed me the other day that she wants to be an interior designer when she grows up. This was news to me, because up until now she’s always wanted to be a singer, and possibly an actress or a fashion designer, but that last one is just because she likes to watch Project Runway.
At first I wasn’t sure where interior designer came from, but then I realized that we’ve been redecorating our den for the last few months, and I think she’s really enjoyed helping me pick out fabrics and rugs and furniture. (Also, I recently videotaped her singing Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” and...

I first heard about Kyran Pittman’s memoir, Planting Dandelions: Field Notes from a Semi-Domesticated Life, via Twitter. I followed all the links, excited that there was finally a new “momoir” on the shelves.

It's no secret that I'm a travel-loving, cooking show-junkie, which puts chef and author, Anthony Bourdain, host of Travel Channel's No Reservations high up on my list of fave foodies.
I caught up with this edgy dad (daughter Ariane will turn five in April) just in time to share his top five tips on how to survive travel while making the most of every trip:
1. Eat like a local.
"Wherever you are, eat what the locals are good at or famous for, and eat where those locals like to eat it. Do not rely on your concierge for dining tips. He’s in the business of making tourists happy. You want the...

When London School of Economics research fellow Catherine Hakim published Erotic Capital: The Power of Attraction in the Boardroom and the Bedroom in September, the mix of sex, candor, and salary stats created a media buzz.
Reviews and op-ed pieces appeared in USA Today, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, The London Times, India’s Sunday Tribune and The Week.
Hakim’s book offers two basic premises: that attractiveness counts in life, and that women are stupid not to capitalize on this fact.
Fair enough. I have nothing intelligent to add, except the suggestion that this thesis is...
