blog post photoChildren as young as 9 or 10 years old are inhaling practically anything they can get their hands on. The use of cleaning products to get "high" has already been in the news, but the newest edition is the use of Air Dusters which are meant for the cleaning of computers and other electronics. Some call it "huffing."

Children who were asked about their usage felt that there was no danger because "it is only air". Tell that to the parents of the many children who have died or suffered brain damage from these exposures.

Please warn your youngster about the dangers inherent with these easily accessible items.

    Scary.

blog post photoTexting while driving is dangerous - we all know it, but many of us still do it. More alarming is how many teens do it. Study - Way Too Many Teens Texting While Driving Wouldn't it be nice if it was impossible for your teen to text and drive?

Well, you now have that option. New technology is being created as we speak to curb this dangerous behavior. Something called Textecution works on a smartphone and can sense, through GPS, if the phone is traveling faster than 10 miles an hour. If it is, it disables the texting function.

Pretty cool and happened to be invented by a dad whose son was about to get his driver's license.

Not surprising, insurance companies are getting involved in finding ways to incentivize policyholders from not texting while driving. Several devices are on the market (and I'm sure many more will spring up soon) that collect data via Bluetooth or GPS to detect cellphone use while driving. These data are sent to the insurance company and policyholders receive a discount for safe driving.

Do you think this is a good idea or too big brother-ish?

blog post photoPull that paci out of your baby's mouth and check to see if it is a Bobby Chupete Pacifier.

There is a recall of 641,000 pacifiers because the mouth guard is too small and poses a choking hazard to infants and toddlers.

The pacifiers were sold for about $1 and have a ring-shaped handle and heart-shaped mouth guard with two ventilation holes. The nipple is made of latex. The name Bobby Chupete and a picture of an infant are printed on the packaging. The pacifier would be aqua, red, white or yellow.

blog post photoTwitter is hugely popular as we all know, but be careful what you tweet...

Courtney Love is being sued for libel by a fashion designer who she posted derogatory comments about on her twitter. They supposedly had a disagreement over Love paying Dawn Simorangkir for clothes she designed so Love posted less than favorable words about the designer (including posting that the Simorangkir had a history of dealing cocaine). The Los Angeles Superior Court would not dismiss the case.

It seems that tweets may not be considered free speech even for non-celebs. A woman is being sued by her former landlord for tweeting that his company thinks it's okay to sleep in a moldy apartment. The tweet did get the attention of her landlord, but probably not in the way she intented - they sued her for libel and are asking for 50K.

A simplistic definition of libel is a "false and malicious publication printed for the purpose of defaming a living person."

But legal experts are dealing with uncharted territory with libel as it pertains to social media. Will a defamatory tweet be treated the same as a derogatory and untrue remark in a printed magazine?

I wonder how the line will be drawn between free speech and libel...

    What do you think?

blog post photoTeens are texting while driving although they know they shouldn't.

A study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project looked at distracted driving behavior of teens. The main culprit being texting while driving.

A phone survey of 800 teens in the U.S. revealed that 26% of those aged 16-17 have texted while driving, with 43% reporting talking on a cell phone while driving.

The researchers also noted that 48% of teens aged 12-17 were in the car when a driver was texting.

The findings indicate that the new laws may not be working at discouraging new drivers from texting and talking on cell phones while driving. Unfortunately, these teens may be picking up these bad habits from their parents. According to the report, teens talked in focus groups about an abundance of parent texting while driving.

The take home message is that teens may be aware of the risks, but according to Amanda Lenhart, co-author of the report, the "desire to stay connected is so strong for teens and their parents that safety sometimes takes a backseat to staying in touch with friends and family."

Also, kids are watching and emulating what many of us do.

blog post photoDavid Anthony Roberts, 69, in an online conversation asked a 14-year-old girl to have sex with him. He was in for quite a shock when he found out it was his wife posing as a young girl.

Cheryl Roberts reportedly read a suspicious message on her husband's computer in 2008 which prompted her to set up profiles on the website BearShare. She posed as a 14-year-old and ended up having sexual talks with her unaware (and disgusting) husband that escalated into him offering to have sex with her.

Cheryl immediately called the police and National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The authorities found indecent images of children on David's computer.

Roberts, of South Wales, was sentenced to attend a program for sex offenders for three years and must register as a sex offender for five years. He is also banned indefinitely from having contact online or in person with children under the age of 18.

The couple had been married for 18 years (they are now divorced). I can't imagine what that poor woman went through.

Please please talk to your kids about the dangers of communicating with strangers online (or on their phones). The risk is way too high.

blog post photoTaylor Swift, the 19-year-old singer, became the youngest ever Entertainer of The Year at the Country Music Association Awards.

But that wasn't all - she beat out Carrie Underwood for female vocalist of the year, and also won best album of the year for Fearless.

Crying, the tall blond took the stage with her band and said "I will never forget this moment because in this moment everything I have ever wanted has just happened to me."

Brad Paisley won for best male vocalist of the year (for the third year in a row) and Sugarland was awarded vocal duo of the year. We're happy to say that Darius Rucker won new artist of the year.

Congratulations Taylor - where can she go from here?
