Chilean Earthquake Changes Earth's Axis, Shortens Day
The recent magnitude 8.8 Chilean earthquake shifted the earth's axis. The Earth's mass is balanced around the around the axis. In other words, we have lost time in a day.
Pasadena researchers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory concluded that our day has shortened by 1.26 microseconds. The day has not shortened by much however- a microsecond is one-millionth of one second.
In addition, space.com reports that astronauts on the International Space Station can see the earthquake damage. They have photographed their view. "While the image is not detailed enough to see damage to individual buildings or roadways, some indicators of earthquake damage are visible," NASA stated.
Our hearts go out to the victims of the earthquake and their families.
