Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon Raises $58.9 Million
This year's Jerry Lewis MDA telethon raised a whopping $58.9 million. The money will be given to support the research and service programs of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
While the amount is less than what was raised in the past few years -- $60.5 million in 2009, and $64 million in 2008 -- it is still an incredible lump of money for a struggling economy.
"I'm heartened by the unique ability of Americans to help others in need, when they themselves are likely struggling financially," said Jerry Lewis, host of the telethon and national chairman of MDA.
The 45th annual telethon reached 40 million viewers and included dozens of performers, like Barry Manilow and Norm Crosby.
