Magic Mushrooms May Ease Cancer-Related Depression

The hallucinogen psilocybin, known as "magic mushrooms", may help ease the anxiety that often accompanies late-stage cancer, researchers said Monday. Psilocybin is known to have similar effects to LSD.

In the study, cancer patients that were given a dose of psilocybin were significantly less depressed 6 months later as compared with patients given a placebo. The patients experienced less anxiety and improved mood.

This was only a pilot study, however, with just 12 cancer patients who took part. So, while further testing needs to be done, this is a promising step in easing the anxiety experienced by cancer patients.
