New Study: Yoga, Tai Chi, and Acupressure Help with Sleeplessness

Short on Zs? Put away those sleeping pills and bust out that yoga mat before bedtime. A recent study in the April 2011 edition of Sleep Medicine Reviews provided evidence that acupressure, yoga, and tai chi can improve both sleep quality and sleep duration for those suffering from insomnia.

These non-traditional remedies for the sleep-deprived fall into a category called CAM, or complementary and alternative medicine. Lisa Shives, M.D., the founder of Northshore Sleep Medicine in Evanston, Illinois strongly advocates these techniques. She believes that by using gentle pressure at key points on the body, or slow, relaxed exercises, you can prepare your body for a good night’s sleep.
