Newt Gingrich Gets Bitten by a Penguin

It looks like Newt Gingrich got some tough feedback from one resident of the animal kingdom on Friday.

The Republican presidential candidate was bitten by a Magellanic penguin while on a private tour of the St. Louis Zoo.

“He was nipped on the finger by a penguin,” zoo public-relations director Susan Gallagher said. “A Band-Aid took care of the injury.”

Gingrich is a self-professed animal lover and has made a point of visiting zoos during his campaign. He also wrote the forward to America's Best Zoos: A Travel Guide for Fans & Families.

Meanwhile, media outlets are loving this news story:

"Newt Gingrich has lost the support of most humans -- conservatives, southerners, reporters -- and now he's lost his base: exotic animals." - The Atlantic

"Newt Gingrich loves animals, but sometimes love hurts. - Politico

"Former allies beg him to drop out. The media laughs at him. Now even the zoo animals, Newt Gingrich's only remaining friends, have begun to turn on him" - New York Magazine.

It's been a rough stretch for the former Speaker of the House. Not only was he bitten by a penguin, but he's facing serious campaign debts and mounting calls to drop out of the race.
