Dessert Politics: Chocolate Chip Takes the Iowa Cookie Caucus
Move over Mitt Romney, in a shocking upset, "chocolate chip" has won the Iowa Cookie Caucus, beating opponents "sugar" and "M&M" by a narrow margin!
The Cookie Caucus is an annual event at Hills Elementary school in Des Moines, Iowa held alongside the Republican polls as a fun way to teach children about democracy.
"We talked about the candidates, and I encouraged them to watch candidates’ television commercials,” teacher Heidi Slinker told the Des Moines Register. "I think because we tied it to cookies, we piqued their interest. But they’re becoming more attuned to what’s really happening."
Fifth graders split into groups and lobbied for their favorite cookie with PowerPoint presentations and home-made posters - all to gain the votes of their younger schoolmates.
In the end, chocolate chip took 155 votes, versus 132 for M&M Cookies and only 107 for sugar cookies.
The Cookie Caucus is generally regarded as a bellwether primary (one that predicts the eventual outcome of the race), with nine of the last 15 Cookie Caucus winners eventually going on to eventually win their party's nomination to run as best snack food.
In other news, the Iowa children's glycemic index was up today and ice cream's approval rating rose 15 points.
