Andy Griffith Dies at 86
Mayberry's favorite sheriff has died at the age of 86.
Andy Griffith, best known as Matlock and the star of The Andy Griffith Show, passed away Tuesday at his home in North Carolina. Former UNC President Bill Friday, a close friend of the actor, confirmed the news.
Griffith was best known for his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor on "The Andy Griffith Show." From 1960 to 1968, he played a single dad raising a young son (played by Ron "Ronny" Howard) in the small town of Mayberry.
Up next was the legal drama Matlock, which ran from 1986 to 1995. He played the title character - the lawyer Ben Matlock.
Griffith married his first wife, Barbara Bray Edwards in 1949 and had three children, including a daughter named DIxie and son Sam - who died in 1966. Bray and Edwards divorced in 1972, and his second marriage to Greek actress Solica Cassuto ended in 1981.
He is survived by his third wife, Cindi Knight, who he married in 1983.
Griffith is remembered fondly by friends, family and fans alike. As Ron Howard wrote on Twitter, ""His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations & shaped my life."
