Sports and Glamour: Do Girls Have to Choose?

Sports and Glamour: Do Girls Have to Choose?

In girl world, sometimes it can seem like sports and glamour are mutually exclusive. More and more, young girls are taking advice from tabloids and fashion mags on how to be girly, and giving up sports in the process.

The Women's Sports Foundation recently released a thought-provoking public service announcement, showing how societal pressures are pulling girls off of the fields and courts before they can reach their potential.

The video - part of their "Keep Her In The Game" initiative - shows several middle school-aged girls lured off of a soccer field by a PA system that blares headlines on how to sculpt themselves into desirable young ladies.

It also includes the alarming statistic that by the age of 14, girls drop out of sports at twice the rate that boys do. In the final shot, the once jersey-clad girls are all primped up in stiletto heels, sexy outfits, and about a pound of makeup.

Let’s hope this add succeeds in convincing parents to encourage their daughters to play sports. Young girls should focus on having fun, rather than obsessing over how they look.

Kudos to the Women’s Sports Foundation for reminding us that when it comes to sports, girls can (and should!) rule!
